Longshan Temple, Lukang

Lougang’s Longshan Temple was built at the end of the Ming dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. Originally located on the bank of the Lugang River, its main deity is Guanyin. It was later moved to its current location in 1786. Longshan Temple is highly valued as the Hall of Taiwanese Art & culture and the Treasure of Chinese Architecture.

Longshan Temple was built in the shape of the Chinese character “,” featuring a mountain gate, a five-door hall, a main hall, and a real hall. In the majestic five-door hall, you will enjoy simple yet elegant stone carvings, woodcarvings, paintings, and koji pottery, such as the dragon pillar, drum and box-shaped blocks, paintings of the Four Lokapalas , and bronze and wood window carvings. Going up the stairs to either side of the five-door bay, you will come to the stage , which is a space where temple-goers put on performances to thank the gods. The eight trigram (Ba Gua) ceiling panel above the stage is the oldest preserved artistic work in Taiwan. Because of its position above the stage, the eight trigram ceiling panel creates an echo during stage performances. The octagonal shape is called “Ba Gua”, imply the significance of peace and warding off evil in Chinese tradition.
